Breaking Out
The Art of Joanne Oviatt

August 6 - September 3, 2010
Former area art teacher, current president of the local artist cooperative gallery Allegheny Artistry, and long-time Warren County artist Joanne Oviatt will share her recent works in our galleries this summer. Her creations reflect themes, forms and materials she gleans from nature. Ms. Oviatt grew up exploring creeks, forests and farms, and uses these deep influences in her work. The elements of nature persist and emerge in her art, which ranges through several materials including sculptures in walnut and catalpa wood; re-formed, recycled copper flashing; cast bronze; cast recycled paper; and paintings drawn from nature and local history.

"Whether it is a painting or sculpture, I like to work large. When it surrounds me, I feel like I am inside the creation. From that vantage point, I can make the dozens of decisions concerning the artistic elements that make my thoughts and message come to life. However, not all of those decisions can be explained by color, line or composition. Sometimes it is even a mystery to me, and the only way that I can explain a choice is that it just seems right."
